alvatore passed the door that led up to the office when he got to Walcot Street. Instead he turned down the next side road and went to the garage where the family's cars were parked. For years they got by on one car, but when Papa managed to buy a second garage space, they soon forgot how they'd ever managed without it.

It was getting on for noon, later than he originally intended to set out for Wellow to interview Paula the Painter. But life with Heather was unpredictable. The woman was at the same time undemanding and totally compelling. She was a different mix of needs and inclinations than any woman he'd been involved with before. And that was no small statement, given the number of women who had passed through Salvatore's life over the years. Angelo once referred to them as Sally's Army.

Both cars were in the garage and Salvatore picked the smaller and newer of them. When he got to Walcot Street, he turned right and headed for Wellsway via Cleveland Bridge. Although it was twice as far as driving through the

city center, the longer route would certainly be quicker. Bath traffic was nearly as infamous as its parking problems.

But instead of concentrating on what he wanted to learn from Paula the Painter, Salvatore's thoughts again returned to Heather. What should he do about her? And what did he want to do about her? And what could he do about her?

And even if he decided—like, say, just suppose he did ask her to marry him, which would solve one set of problems— there was no telling what she would answer. He was never sure how she would respond to a suggestion. Yet her flexibilities were good things. His feelings for her were like none he had ever experienced before. But it was not an easy situation. That was the one thing that was certain.

Near the top of the Wellsway hill Salvatore turned left onto the Midford road and passed St. Martin's Hospital. He shook his head and tried to force himself to think about Paula the Painter in Wellow. She had lived with Valerie when Uncle Foxwell still lived next door. So she knew him. And this Paula had a boyfriend, wasn't that what Valerie had said? Jealous of her talent, and what else?

"Will you have some more tea?" Sheila Foxwell asked Gina. "I can add more water."

"No. Thank you."

"Sure?"

Absolutely sure, Gina thought. "I couldn't drink another drop."

"I know what you mean. My bladder has just never been the same since I had this rodent." Sheila Foxwell bounced little Phil on her knee. A fresh gob of snot oozed onto his upper lip.

Gina stood. "I do thank you for talking with me, Mrs. Foxwell."

"When will you get Winston out of jail?"

"I'll do everything I can. But—"

"Yeah, you said. You can't promise." Sheila Foxwell let her shoulders sag. "But I want to ask him about that lottery you said about."

Gina was careful where she stepped as she made her way to the door.
